»THE REPRODUCTION – What it Means to Exist in the Extreme Present«

[THE REPRODUCTION – What it Means to Exist in the Extreme Present] is a hybrid dance and technological mashup, questioning the role of ‘the censored image’ in contemporary culture. The work is a research involving performer and artist: Madison Pomarico, who utilizes pre-recorded videos of herself performing specific tasks, which later are re-performed in real time in front of a camera; her images being overlaid onto the pre-recording, producing a ghostly effect of past and present. In this process she plays with alternative choreographic timelines and illustrates two or more versions of the same narrative. Intentionally manipulating and altering the past projections, Madison illustrates the process of censorship, disrupting our perception of reality. In doing so, the work mirrors the stark ‘post-truth’ reality of digital existence in the 21st century. Here, George Orwell’s ‘1984’ is re-interpreted and retrofitted in a modern-day context, highlighting the parallels between fictional representations of the present, and the uncanny reality.

Artist: Madison Pomarico

Madison Pomarico is a Berlin-based dance and multimedia artist whose body of work derives from her background in contemporary performance. Her work manifests in various contexts eg. stage, installations, or films - primarily concerned with the transformation of physicalities between performers, and their relationship to digital elements. The tone of her work is defined by this codependency to technology or material, as a way to describe developmental changes that take place in the body. Her projects are often documented on video, and are sometimes large scale. Some of her more recent projects include: ‘198021 Five Attempts to Reappropriate the Censor’ (2021), and 'Human Systems of a Structure - 16ft Span’ (2020). This piece was recently part of the exhibition: 'Concept 2021' at CICA Museum, Seoul in July 2021. Her earlier collection of screen-dance works, such as 'Erythrophobia' and 'I, The Consumer', have been internationally recognized and screened as part of the official selection at 'The Short Cinema' Film Festival (UK, 2018) and received honorable mentions at the Adobe Awards and Mexico City Film Festival (2018).
